What are Permitted and Prohibited Items?

Prohibited items are weapons, explosives, incendiaries, and items that are seemingly harmless but may be used as weapons - the so-called "dual-use" items. Please refer to the TSA Permitted and Prohibited list for more information.

If you are travelling to or from UK airports, due to increased security, hand luggage must be carried in a single clear plastic carrier bag and nothing may be carried in pockets. Items that may be carried as hnd luggage includes:

• Pocket-size wallets / purses;
• Essential travel documents;
• Prescription medicines and medical items needed for the flight (must be verified as authentic if in liquid form);
• Glasses and sunglasses (but not cases);
• Contact les holders (no bottles);
• Female sanitary items needed for te flight (must be unboxed);
• Unboxed tissues, handkerchiefs and keys;
• For those travelling with a baby:
  • Baby food and milk (must be tasted by carer of the baby at airport security);
  • Baby sanitary items needed for the flight (nappies, wipes, creams and nappy desposal bags).

So, for example, if you want to read a book on a long flight, then tough!

How early should I arrive at the airport?

Check with your airline or travel agent to determine how early to arrive at the airport. Recommended check-in times differ by airline/airport and change during peak travel times.

How should I pack before my flight?

There are different restrictions on what you can pack in your carry-on vs. your checked baggage. All of your baggage will be screened and possibly hand-searched as part of the new security measures. Please refer to TSA's Prepare For Takeoff web page to find tips to help you pack.

What can I do if my property is lost, missing or damaged during the baggage screening process or at the Security Checkpoint?
