Are dogs allowed in the White Mountain National Forest?

Dogs are allowed on the WMNF, but must be under verbal or physical restraint at all times. Be considerate of other hikers. Carry a leash not longer than 6 ft. and use it when around other people. Please remember to clean up after your dog.

Are dogs allowed in campgrounds?

Dogs are allowed on a leash in WMNF campgrounds. Be considerate of other campers and be aware that quiet time is 10PM to 6AM.

How do I make a reservation for a campground?

The WMNF has 23 developed campgrounds including 3 group campgrounds. Reservations are accepted at some of the campgrounds and all campgrounds have sites set aside on a first come first serve basis. The reservation telephone number is: 877-444-6777 (Canadian callers use 518-885-3639). The Supervisor's Office and Ranger Station offices are unable to accept reservations. These offices are available to answer questions about the facilities.

Are there showers and/or electricity in the campgrounds?

All campgrounds provide basic services, such as water and toilets, but no hookups. Campton, Russell Pond and Jigger Johnson have coin operated showers available. Campgrounds are designed for a rustic experience.

When do the campgrounds open/close?

Most of the campgrounds are open mid-May to mid-October, and some are open year round. Please call a Forest Service office for information about a specific campground.

How many people are allowed on a campsite?

8 people and 2 vehicles are allowed on a campsite. Tents must be on on a gravel pad.

When are the black flies gone?

Black fly season usually runs from late spring to early summer. Many insect repellents are effective against black flies and mosquitoes. Insects tend to be worse in wet, swampy places. Exposed areas, especially high windy ridges, provide the most relief.

Do I need a fishing license, and if so where can I purchase?

State fishing licenses are required to fish on the National Forest and may be obtained from the many sporting goods and general stores in the area. Fishing licenses are required by the State of NH and Maine. You may contact NH Fish & Game Dept. at: 603-271-2743, or Maine Fish & Wildlife, (Fisheries Division) at: 207-287-8000 for more info. about how and where to purchase your fishing license. Children under the age of 16 do not need a fishing license.

When is the best time to view the fall colors?

There is no way to predict when fall foliage will be at its peak. Fall foliage is dependent on weather conditions.

Where can I purchase a parking pass and what is the cost?

Parking passes are available at all Forest Service offices and many local vendors. Many trail heads now have self-service fee stations. The daily, per site price is $3. Other options include a 7-consecutive days parking pass for $5, an annual pass for one vehicle for $20 and $25 for the two vehicle "household." For more information, click here.

Where can I go mountain biking?

The WMNF has many excellent opportunities for road and mountain biking. There is an extensive network of woods roads for mountain. biking. It is prohibited on the Appalachian Trail, and in the 5 designated Wildernesses: Caribou-Speckled Mountain, Great Gulf, Pemigewasset, Presidential /Dry River and Sandwich Range.

Where can I go day hiking?

There are 1200 miles of hiking trails on the National Forest. The Forest Service publishes several informational Recreation Opportunity Guides (ROG's) to help you plan your trip. In addition to using this resource, please consult a hiking guide and purchase a map before beginning your trip. The book "AMC's Best Day Hikes in the White Mountains" is perfect for people wanting to do beginner hikes in the White Mountains. It is very easy to use and detailed. Where can I go 4-wheeling?

The WMNF is closed to summer off-road vehicles.

Can I snowmobile on the White Mountain National Forest?

Snowmobiling on the White Mountain National Forest is permitted only on designated, groomed trails, and only when there is an accumulation of 6 inches of snow or more on a continuing basis. There are approximately 310 miles of trail on the Forest. Most are maintained by local clubs.

Where can I see a moose?

The Kancamagus Scenic Byway and northernmost sections of the White Mountains are well known for moose sightings.

How do I know where I can/can't camp in the back country?

Select a campsite 200 feet or more from trails, lakes and streams, unless you're using a designated site. Always consult a copy of the Back country Camping Rules brochure for restrictions.

What is the weather?

White Mountain weather is unpredictable. At any time of year, you should be prepared with warm clothing and good rain gear.

Are there cabins for rent?

The WMNF has 2 back country cabins available for rent. Contact the Saco Ranger Station for more information.

Are there bears in the National Forest?

Black bears are abundant in some areas of the National Forest. They have been known to visit shelters, tent platforms and campgrounds. You can prevent bear/people conflicts by following a few simple guidelines. Store / Hang food properly away from (and never in) your tent.
